The AQI in Delhi is seemingly increasing by the day. On Saturday, October 11, the Air Quality Index (AQI) bordered on ‘poor’ as the reading jumped to 193. The Delhi AQI was 193 at 5 am on Saturday, as per the Air Quality Early Warning System (EWS) for Delhi.
This was far higher than 129 recorded at 5:30 am on Friday and 91 recorded at the same time on Thursday.
The AQI reading is categorised as Good (0-50), Satisfactory (51-100), Moderately Polluted (101-200), Poor (201-300), Very Poor (301-400), and Severe (401-500). Thus, higher the AQI reading, the unhealthier it gets to breathe.
These categories are arrived at after evaluating various parameters. The most prominent among these is the particulate matter (PM) 2.5 pollutant, which is very fine and easy to breathe in. This causes the most harm to humans. As per the World Health Organization, “Exposure to PM2.5 can cause diseases both to our cardiovascular and respiratory system, provoking, for example stroke, lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).”
The permissible limit for PM 2.5 set by WHO is 15 µg/m³.
The temperature in Delhi at 5:30 am on Friday was nearly the same as on Friday. It was still sub-20 degrees Celsius at 19.8 degrees Celsius (19.2°C on Saturday).
The maximum temperature reported on Friday was 29.9°C (4.3°C below normal) while the minimum was pegged at 18.8°C (2.2°C below normal) by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The maximum temperature in Delhi on Saturday could remain in the range of 30-32°C, while the minimum is likely to hover between 18°C and 20°C.
