A day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a review meeting with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and the Delhi Police Commissioner over law and order situation in the Capital, district deputy commissioners of police (DCP) were on Saturday directed to intensify drives against criminals, banned drugs and illegal immigrants.

Sources in the police said the directions were issued by Special Commissioners (Law and Order) Madhup Tiwari and Ravindra Yadav in a meeting held at the Delhi Police Headquarters in the afternoon. The meeting was attended by the joint commissioners of all the six ranges.

The special commissioners directed the joint commissioners and all the 15 district DCPs to intensify their drives against criminals, syndicates smuggling narcotic substances, and illegal immigrants staying in Delhi, sources added.

Delhi has been divided into 15 police districts, which have been further divided into six ranges looked after by joint commissioner-rank officers.

“The Delhi Police, in the last few months, has conducted multiple drives to control crimes in the city. The 24-hour drives like Operation Kawach and the two-month drive against Bangladeshi immigrants have yielded fruitful results… Such drives are to be continued in the future,” a source said.

In the coming days, more such drives will be held to apprehend bootleggers, proclaimed offenders and juveniles involved in crimes, the source added.

“A plan will be formulated to conduct the drive against illegal immigrants and their nexus. The police have been asked to break the chain – from immigrants illegally entering to the city and getting identity cards made on the basis of forged documents,” a source further said.

Terming it an issue of national security that should be dealt with strictly, Shah had on Friday directed the Delhi Police to take strict action against networks that help illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingya enter India, including those who help them get fake documents. He had said that the local police needed to work in coordination with elite units such as the Special Cell and Crime Branch when it comes to dealing with the issue of illegal immigration.

Shah had further said that it should be the Delhi Police’s priority to eliminate interstate gangs ruthlessly. Action must be taken with “top to bottom and bottom to top approach” in narcotics cases, and such drug networks should be dismantled, he had added.
