Congress may go for President’s rule if Kiran Reddy resigns

The UPA government is now rushing the Bill to the Rajya Sabha.

With Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy likely to resign on Wednesday capping his months of rebellion against the division of the state, the Congress high command is learnt to have made up its mind to go for imposition of President’s Rule.

With Assembly elections just two months away, sources in the Congress said the party is not looking at naming a successor and would prefer Central rule in the state. Sources said the UPA government would, however, allow Governor E S L Narasimhan to go through the motions of exploring the options. Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh take place along with general elections.

Although the Congress is not yet certain about the exact number of MLAs that could go with Reddy who reportedly has plans to float a new outfit. Party sources said Reddy has not been able to win over a substantial number of MLAs and believes this has upset his plans for a new party.

The UPA government is now rushing the Bill to the Rajya Sabha. It wants Parliament’s nod and the formalities of Presidential assent and notification of the creation of the new state to be completed early in view of the polls.
