Weeks after 2024 — the year celebrating 100 years of surrealism — drew to a close, India will see an exhibition of one of its more iconic masters: Spanish artist Salvador Dali.
Comprising works from the prestigious Pierre Argillet Collection, the exhibition ‘Dali Comes to India’ will feature over 200 original works by the renowned surrealist, including etchings, watercolors and tapestries.
“Being an international group of galleries and having hosted very successful exhibitions of Dalí’s work, Bruno Art Group is excited to bring Dalí to India for the first time to showcase his works since the artist’s visit to India in 1967,” stated Motti Abramovitz, owner and CEO of Bruno Art Group that is presenting the exhibition in Delhi. To be held at Visual Arts Gallery at India Habitat Centre from February 7 to 13, the travelling exhibition has been curated by Christine Argillet, daughter of Pierre Argillet, a prominent French collector who shared a close friendship with Dali and was also his publisher. The showcase will include some of the key works from the collection built over several decades.
If the series ‘The Songs of Maldoror’ is a set of 50 prints, including eight reworked plates where Dalí depicted visions of his childhood traumas, ‘Mythologie’ comprises etchings in the “hasard objectif” technique where Dali draws from “symbolism of ancient Greek legends”.
The etchings from the ‘Don Juan’ series reflect on “themes of seduction, love and death”. The suite of works that comprise ‘Secret Poems by Apollinaire’ were originally planned to illustrate songs by French singer-songwriter Georges Brassens but later drew inspiration from French poet-playwright Guillaume Apollinaire’s poems.
For the series ‘Faust’, inspired by the eponymous classic by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the artist used roulette, ruby, and diamond as etching tools.
