Four brick kiln workers were killed and 18 others injured after a truck hit the canter they were travelling in on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, said Ghaziabad Police.
The canter, a medium-sized truck, was carrying 37 workers, including some children, from Sonipat in Haryana to Shahjahanpur and Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh. Police said they were heading home to celebrate Bakrid.
Police said the incident took place around 1.15 am. The canter was parked on the side of the road and some men had got out to relieve themselves. That’s when a truck, coming from Baghpat, collided with the canter. The vehicle overturned, killing four people on the spot.
The deceased are 40-year-old Maya Devi, 60-year-old Najuman, her son 20-year-old Irshad, and 21-year-old Shabina. They were residents of Kumrua village in Hardoi, UP.
“The canter was carrying 37 labourers who worked at a brick kiln in Gannaur, Sonipat. The 18 injured were immediately admitted to the district hospital for treatment by local police. From there, nine were referred to GTB Hospital, New Delhi, for better treatment,” said Veerendra Kumar, Additional DCP, Ghaziabad.
Officers said while an FIR has not been registered in the case yet, the accused driver has been arrested. “The victims have not filed any complaint yet. The accused driver, Ritesh Kumar, is a resident of Bihar. His truck has also been impounded. Further legal action is being taken,” said an officer at Muradnagar police station.
