CCTV cameras and 24-hour surveillance, alarm to check water level, permanent pump sets and automatic pump houses – these are some of the key measures being undertaken by the Public Works Department (PWD) to prevent waterlogging this monsoon, said officials.
The department has identified 165 waterlogging spots and five hotspots in the city as it begins monsoon preparedness.
PWD Minister Atishi held a review meeting with senior officials on Friday and directed them to ensure a system is in place so that no inconvenience is caused to the public during the rainy season. “Under the leadership of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, we are committed to working towards freeing Delhi of waterlogging,” said Atishi in a statement.
Officials said that as part of monsoon preparedness, the department has installed 128 pump houses, which has over 700 pumps. As many as 11 pump houses are fully automatic. “PWD will also deploy its mobile pump units, if necessary. The first phase of desilting work on drains will be completed by May 31. Central control room will monitor severe waterlogging areas through 24-hour CCTV,” said an official.
PWD will establish control rooms at 10 other locations.
The five high-risk hotspots identified by the department are: New Rohtak Road, area under Zakir Nagar flyover, Loni Road golchakkar, Jahangirpuri Metro Station, and Karala Kanjhawala Road.
