3 days after alleged suicides of Gurgaon nurse, 2-year-old son, police arrest husband, father-in-law over dowry harassmentSharmila, 28, and her two-year-old son died after jumping from the seventh floor of Siddharth Society at Sector-93 on Wednesday, the police said.

The city police on Friday arrested a man and his father in connection with the suicide deaths of a woman and her two-year-old son in Gurgaon over alleged dowry harassment.

Sharmila, 28, and her two-year-old son died after jumping from the seventh floor of Siddharth Society at Sector-93 on Wednesday, the police said.

The police arrested the woman’s husband, Rohit, 32, and his father, Rajender, 57, both residents of Chamaheda village in Mahendragarh, Haryana, based on the complaint of Sharmila’s brother, who alleged that her in-laws allegedly harassed her for dowry, demanding a car, gold jewellery, money for a flat, and gifts during festivals since their marriage in 2021.

Surender stated his sister was a staff nurse at Paras Hospital with a monthly salary of Rs 55,000.

“Rohit’s parents reportedly took her salary and ATM card, forcing her to rely on her parental family for expenses. The harassment continued after her son’s birth, with demands persisting during a kuan pujan ceremony in October 2022. Despite attempts by villagers to intervene, the situation did not improve,” he said in the complaint.

“On October 22, the Sector-93 police outpost under the Sector-10 police station received information about the incident. A team reached the spot where Sharmila and her son were found dead. Forensic and crime scene teams inspected the site, and the bodies were sent for post-mortem examination,” a police spokesperson said.

“On October 20, Sharmila asked her father for Rs 5 lakh as demanded. When he visited with Rs 2 lakh on October 21, her in-laws allegedly assaulted her for bringing insufficient money and coerced her father into signing blank papers. Unable to bear the harassment, Sharmila took her life and that of her son by jumping from the seventh floor,” the officer said.
