A little over a year before a five-year-old boy died in a swimming pool in a Gurgaon residential society, another boy had almost drowned in a similar fashion before he was saved by a resident, it has emerged.
And similar to Wednesday’s incident, which claimed the life of Mevansh Singla, a kindergarten student, in the earlier case too, the lifeguard was accused of being busy with his phone while on duty, residents said.
Meanwhile, police have arrested two more men for alleged negligence in Mevansh’s case, officials said. Earlier, two lifeguards, who were on duty at the time of the drowning, were arrested Thursday for alleged negligence.
The incident took place on Wednesday evening when Mevansh moved to a deeper pool, which was not meant for children.
On Saturday, police arrested Sumit, and Naresh, both hailing from Jind and residing in Sector-71.
Recalling last year’s incident, Harbeer Singh, a resident, said, “Around 6.30 pm on April 17, 2023, my son’s friend Divyansh moved to the deeper pool after seeing older boys play there. My wife sounded an alarm seeing him flailing his arms around. A resident jumped in and saved him while the lifeguard was engrossed in his phone. We even alerted the BPMS (management company), but they failed to take notice.” Sharing a screenshot of the message relaying this information, an RWA member said, “This did not garner attention and the negligence continued.”
A police spokesperson said that during investigation into Mevansh’s death, it was found that Sumit had taken up the contract for the swimming pool while Naresh had been working as a lifeguard for the past two months. At the time of the incident, Naresh was on duty, he said.
