Protests erupted after a 20-year-old student of a college near Devanampattinam in Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district was killed after an autorickshaw he was travelling in along with other students overturned.

A resident of Manapakkam village in the district, S Tamilselvan and seven other students were rushed to the Cuddalore government hospital, where he succumbed to injuries on Wednesday.

Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his deepest condolences and announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to Tamilselvan’s family.

Around 10 am on Friday, hundreds of college students, both male and female, took out a protest march and tried to block a road, demanding the college administration and the district authorities provide better transportation facilities in the area and higher compensation for the deceased student’s family.

While speaking to the media, the students said there were not enough buses and autorickshaws for students to reach the college. They claimed overcrowding was the reason why the autorickshaw overturned.

Police deployed armed personnel and attempted to thwart the students’ protest. The crowd dispersed three hours later, after the district administration and the police promised them that their demands would be conveyed to the district collector.

The Devanampattinam police have registered a case under section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code against the autorickshaw driver, who is under treatment.
