Now a uniform for govt school teachers in ChandigarhAccording to the circular dated June 30, 2025, the dress code will be observed once a week, preferably on Mondays and during school celebrations.

In a first-of-its-kind move, the Chandigarh education department has introduced a uniform dress code for all government school teachers in the Union Territory, aiming to promote a more professional and cohesive teaching environment. The directive, issued by the District Education Officer, U.T. Chandigarh, mandates compliance with immediate effect.

According to the circular dated June 30, 2025, the dress code will be observed once a week, preferably on Mondays and during school celebrations.

Guidelines outlined

The official memo, addressed to principals and heads of all government schools, specifies the attire as follows:

• Female teachers are to wear white sarees or salwar kameez with a golden or beige border, or off-white sarees with a similar design.
• Male teachers must wear a white formal shirt paired with navy blue trousers.

The directive states that the initiative is aimed at “unifying the appearance of educators, fostering a sense of professionalism, and creating an environment conducive to learning.”

All school heads have been directed to ensure that the guidelines are followed without delay, with the memo emphasising “strict adherence” to the new dress code. A sample colour code has also been provided with the order for reference.

The move has sparked conversation among teachers and education professionals, with some welcoming the measure as a way to standardise decorum in schools, while others have raised questions about personal freedom and practical implementation.
