‘Toothless’ advisory council to induct experts, some old members to stay

With the term of the Administrator’s Advisory Council having ended in March, some new members are set to be inducted.

With the term of the Administrator’s Advisory Council having ended in March, some new members are set to be inducted. The Administration has shortlisted a few names and these will be finalised once the Administrator gives his nod. With six meetings held in the last three years and no concrete decisions being taken, the Advisory Council has failed to serve much purpose during its last tenure.

The Advisory Council is constituted for a period of two years and consists of experts from different fields, who can give their opinion on vital issues concerning the city. It will now consist of some old and new members. However,in the meetings held so far, only a few decision were taken. In fact,of the nine standing committees constituted, some did not meet even once.

K K Sharma,Adviser to the UT Administrator said,“A meeting of the council will be held soon after the new members are finalised”.

The Advisory Council was constituted on April 1,2010 for a term of two years. As this ended, extension for a year was given. With even this having come to an end on March 31,the committee has to be reconstituted. A proposal was mooted to give an extension to the same members.

BJP city unit president Sanjay Tandon, who is a member of the committee said,“The Advisory Council is a toothless body. Even when suggestions are given,it is neither followed up,nor is action taken. While we held meetings of the sub-committee on law and order and made suggestions, the officials were not keen to implement them”.

In fact, the last meeting of the committee was held in February, and the minutes of the meeting was distributed among the members, recently. The nine standing committees that were constituted included education, urban infrastructure for the city, environment, health, urban planning and heritage preservation, law and order, sports, transport and traffic management.

Another member Bhajan Singh Maru said,“The Advisory Council is better now, when compared to what it was during the tenure of former UT Administrator Gen S F Rodrigues (retd),as the members held no meetings then. However, nothing concrete is coming out of the meetings that are being held”.
