The Crime Branch of Panchkula police has arrested three members of the infamous, ‘Gulel/Kachchha Baniyan Gang’, also known as the ‘Bala Gang’, which has been linked to over 30 cases of murder, robbery, and dacoity across India.
DCP (Crime) Amit Dahiya said that the Sector-26 Crime Branch team, led by Inspector Dalip Singh and his unit, played a pivotal role in tracking and apprehending the gang members from Madhya Pradesh. The gang hails from the forested and tribal areas of the state and is known for its extreme criminal behaviour.
These criminals used to operate while living in the jungles, avoiding mobile phones, and targeting isolated and unoccupied homes.
As per the police, the breakthrough came when one of the gang members was identified through a distinctive tattoo seen in CCTV footage. The tattoo proved crucial in tracking down and apprehending the suspect.
The arrest was made possible with the help of alert local residents, who caught one of the gang members called Sujan during an attempted break-in in Panchkula. Another member was later arrested in Madhya Pradesh and brought on remand for further questioning.
Describing the gang’s modus operandi, DCP Dahiya said, “Some members would conduct reconnaissance, while others would later execute the crimes. If caught or challenged during their acts, the gang would launch violent attacks using gulels (slingshots) or iron rods to facilitate escape. Before committing a crime, they would often consume alcohol to induce aggressive behaviour. Once inside a house, they would lock the family in one room and respond to any resistance with brutal force.”
The gang has attempted to carry out crimes at multiple locations in Panchkula, including Tipra Road and Sector 2, but failed due to vigilant local residents and heightened police presence. About a month ago, the gang successfully executed a robbery worth Rs 40 lakh in Faridabad.
Meanwhile, DCP Dahiya has shared his personal contact number (8146630006) to encourage citizens to report any crime-related information confidentially. He has also urged police departments from other districts in Haryana and across the country to collaborate with the Panchkula police to obtain production warrants against the gang members and ensure the recovery of stolen property.
Furthermore, the Panchkula police, in coordination with Madhya Pradesh authorities, is planning joint operations to arrest the remaining members of the gang.
