A day after the retired Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Punjab Police shot dead his son-in-law, an Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS) officer, inside the Chandigarh district court complex, the accused was sent to two-day police custody by the district court on Sunday.
The accused, Malvinder Singh Sidhu (58), was arrested Saturday, and was produced by the Chandigarh Police before the court of Judicial Magistrate.
While seeking remand of three days, the public prosecutor contended that the license of the weapon, a .32 bore pistol, recovered from the accused, is to be verified. Also, the accused will be questioned to verify the role of other people in the matter and regarding the allegations by the victim’s family that a murder controversy had been hatched.
The public prosecutor told the court it was also to be probed from where the accused brought the pistol inside the court complex. After hearing the matter, the court granted two-day remand of the accused. The accused will be produced in the court again on Tuesday.
The postmortem on the victim was conducted at the PGIMER Sunday.
The victim, Harprit Singh (37), was posted with the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare in New Delhi. He was allegedly shot dead by Malvinder.
An FIR was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Section 103(1) (whoever commits murder shall be punished with death or imprisonment for life, and shall also be liable to fine) and relevant sections of the Arms Act.
Karnail Singh, father of victim Harprit Singh, Sunday told media persons that “on the day of the incident, we reached on time as we were told by the mediation staff. But we kept on waiting. The accused came late by around one and a half hour. The accused went out from the mediation room, and then called my son outside. As we moved outside the mediation room, the accused opened fire on my son”.
“We had come here for mediation on three dates, during which the accused took us into confidence. On the day of the incident, he killed my son with planning,” alleged Karnail.
The victim’s father said that after his son was shot, no one in the court came to help, and his son kept lying on the floor. Later, a few advocates came and took his son to hospital after 15-20 minutes. Karnail said there is no checking in the court.
