Nearly 1,000 workers from 80 village panchayats staged a demonstration in front of the deputy commissioner’s office in Jalandhar,demanding registration of a case against officials responsible for poor implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA). The villagers said they got themselves registered under the Act three years ago but were yet to get any work. Led by District Youth Congress chief Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary,the protestors demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter and also threatened to sit on a fast-unto-death from August 15 if the unemployment allowance for the last three years were not given to for job card holders.
