A delegation of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind on Friday met Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj in Amritsar to discuss matters related to the Waqf Bill, which was passed by Parliament, and other religious issues.

In a statement, the Akal Takht said the meeting with the members of the more than century-old organisation of Muslim scholars was aimed at deepening interfaith cooperation, addressing common challenges, and reinforcing communal harmony between the Sikh and Muslim communities.

Jathedar Gargaj expressed concern over recent incidents where minority rights appeared to have been compromised, in an indirect reference to the Waqf Bill. “It is disheartening to see prolonged detentions without proper hearings and hasty legislation affecting minority rights. This nation belongs to all, and no community’s rights should ever be undermined,” said Gargajj.

Reflecting on the inclusive legacy of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the first ruler of the Sikh empire who once ensured equal representation in his Cabinet, he said, “No single group should claim exclusive rights. Every community deserves equal recognition”.

Members of the Jamiat delegation included general secretary Maulana Hakimudin Kasmi, Owais Sultan Khan, Maulana Ali Hasan, Maulana Arif, Mufti Mahidi Hasan Aini, and Maulana Javed Siddiqui, among others.

During the discussion, Siddiqui highlighted the longstanding bond between his outfit and Akal Takht. “For years, we have maintained close ties with Sri Akal Takht Sahib to ensure that any emerging issues are resolved collectively and peacefully. Our goal is to protect the rights of all communities,” Siddiqui said.

The delegation assured that its leaders would take concerted measures with Sikh representatives if the latter’s institutions raise any concern.

Jathedar Gargaj highlighted the nation’s rich cultural mosaic and stressed the importance of equality. “The true beauty of our country lies in its interwoven tapestry of diverse cultures, religions, and languages, and every community must enjoy equal dignity and respect,” he said.
