During the resumed hearing, the division bench headed by Justices Surya Kant and Ajay Tewari directed the UT deputy commissioner Mohammed Shayin to act against the illegal encroachments in accordance with the law.

The bench orally remarked that the UT administration was acting leniently against encroachments in the grain market and had failed to initiate steps for its removal, while asking the authorities why they failed to remove the Market Committee Chairman if the menace continued.

The Chandigarh administration submitted the market committee is an elected body and there is no administrative control over the committee.
