The Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday cleared two big-ticket projects – Tunnel Road and Sky Deck – mooted by Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

According to Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil, the ‘Underground Vehicular Tunnel in Twin Tube Mode’ from Esteem Mall, Hebbal to Silk Board Junction is expected to cost Rs 12,690 crore.

Shivakumar proposed the Tunnel Road soon after the Congress came to power in the state last year. The proposal was aimed at reducing traffic congestion in Bengaluru. In May this year, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike decided to engage a consultant to prepare a Detailed Project Report on the 18-km tunnel road between Hebbal and Silk Board junction. The entry and exit points for the road were also identified.

“Under the Sky Deck project, a 250-feet tower will come up at a cost of Rs 500 crore,” Patil said following the Cabinet meeting. The location is yet to be finalised and the administrative approval for the project was based on line estimates made, the minister added.

Another big-ticket project for Bengaluru that received the Cabinet nod was a centralised control and management system for street lights in the city. Under the project, LED street lights will be installed and managed by the BBMP for seven years at a cost of Rs 684.34 crore.

The Cabinet also decided to issue fresh guidelines for compensation provided under the Transferable Development Rights scheme to those who lose land in BBMP limits for various development projects.
