Nearly two weeks after a machine learning engineer at Ola Krutrim, the company’s AI arm, was found dead in Bengaluru, allegations have cropped up on social media suggesting that the 25-year-old died by suicide due to “work pressure”.
The company has responded to the social media posts, saying that the employee, Nikhil Somwanshi, was “on personal leave at the time of the incident”.
Somwanshi, who hails from Jalgaon in Maharashtra, was a resident of HSR Layout. He had recently completed a course at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. A police officer said that he was staying in a room with another friend. When he allegedly went missing on May 7, his friend began searching for him. Somwanshi’s body was found on May 8.
After the post-mortem, Somwanshi’s body was handed over to his family members.
The incident became public on May 17 after an anonymous Reddit user claimed that Somwanshi’s death was linked to “work pressure”. The viral Reddit post claimed that Somwanshi was part of a three-member team managing a critical project. After the other two members exited, the entire workload allegedly fell on him. The post also named a senior manager, alleging that he verbally abused employees, especially freshers, and pressured team members.
Later, some other anonymous users on Reddit questioned why the issue was not being highlighted.
“Nikhil was on personal leave at the time of the incident. He had reached out to his manager on the 8th of April, expressing that he needed rest, and was promptly granted personal time off. Later, on the 17th of April, he shared that he was feeling better but would benefit from additional rest, and his leave was extended accordingly,” an Ola Krutrim spokesperson said in a statement on Monday.
“We are extending our full support to Nikhil’s family and our employees during this time of grief. We are also in contact with the relevant authorities and will continue to offer our assistance as needed,” it added.
The police are looking into the allegations.
