Bangalore News highlights: Congress’s Satish Jarkiholi withdraws ‘Hindu’ origin remark, tenders apology amid protests by BJP

Bangalore News highlights: At an event organised by Manava Bandutva Vedike on November 6, Jarkiholi had said: “The word ‘Hindu’ is derived from Persian. How did it come to India?”

In a letter on Wednesday, Jarkiholi appealed to Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai to set up an enquiry committee to probe those who “conspired to defame” him by “misinterpreting” his remarks made at an event in Chikkodi. (Image: Facebook/satishljarkiholi)

Bangalore News highlights: Karnataka BJP held protests across the state Wednesday condemning the remarks of Congress working president Satish Jarkiholi, who had said that the word ‘Hindu’ has a Persian origin and its meaning is “very dirty”. With the protests at various district centres, the BJP plans to make the Congress leader’s remarks a poll issue in Karnataka as police complaints were filed against Jarkiholi in different parts of the state. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai urged the Congress to either take action against Jarkiholi for his remarks or announce that they stand by his statement. “I don’t know why they are in such confusion… They don’t have a clear stand… The basic principle of Congress – to rule the country by keeping people confused – has surfaced due to this issue,” Bommai said.

In the short while that the call lasted, the caller displayed the private parts of a woman to the MLA, screen-recorded the call, and sent the video to Thippareddy’s number.

This incident, which grabbed headlines in Karnataka, was among the several cases of ‘sextortion’ being reported in the state. Extorting money or other valuables is the least of concerns in such cases, as victims have even chosen to end their lives after falling prey to such traps.
