The Karnataka education department suspended 16 teachers in Kalburgi district on Wednesday on suspicion of allowing students to “mass copy” during the mathematics paper of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination held on April 3.
According to officials of Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB), the incident was reported at Government High School, Gabbur, located in the Afazalpur taluk.
A senior KSEAB official said, “The Kalburgi superintendent of police was on election rounds Monday but stopped at the school after seeing a crowd gathering at the examination centre. When the officer went to check, it was found that there were bits of paper scripts lying near the window. After suspecting that a mass copying was underway, the SP reported the incident to the commissioner of the Department of Public Instruction.”
Later, the commissioner directed the assistant commissioner of police, Kalburgi, to take action against the teachers. As a result, all the 16 teachers deputed for invigilation work at the examination centre were suspended. “The teachers failed to take cognizance of the bits of paper scripts and prevent mass copying. Hence, we suspended them. Now, a new set of teachers have been deputed at the examination centre,” said a KSEAB official.
Meanwhile, the evaluation for the second pre-university (PU) examination has already begun. Around 17,000 teachers have been deputed for evaluation. The evaluation of the SSLC examination is set to be slightly delayed as some of the teachers would be called for training for the Karnataka Assembly election.
