Seven stray dogs mauled a nine-year-old boy before he was rescued by morning walkers in Surat on Thursday.

The police said the incident took place at Umargam, when the boy, Shani Rathod, was on his way to school. He was alone when he was attacked by the stray dogs and has been admitted to New Civil Hospital for treatment, they added.

New Civil Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Ganesh Govekar said, “The condition of the boy is stable. There were 20 injuries on his body and a portion of the skin on his skull was torn. He underwent an operation and we have given him anti-rabies injection and tetanus vaccine.”

When contacted, an eyewitness to the incident, Dipak Patel, said: “There are over 30 stray dogs in our area. We have complained to the municipal corporation many times, but no action has been taken. Not only minors, but the elderly are also scared of stray dogs while walking alone during the night.”

He added that seven food carts on the roadside sell non-vegetarian food in the area, attracting stray dogs.

Following the incident, the dog-catching team of the civic body has began an operation to catch the strays, said municipal corporation officials.
