The Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH) in Gujarat, in an Action Taken Report submitted to the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) principal bench has said that the November 29 fire that killed eight labourers at Aether Industries’ chemical plant in Surat could have been the result of a leak in the gasket of solvent tetrahydrofuran’s (THF) storage tank, which led to an explosion.
The west zone bench of the NGT in Pune will hear the matter on January 10. This comes after the NGT’s principal bench ordered a sou motu probe into the fire incident on December 3, based on a report that appeared in The Indian Express on November 30.
According to the ATR (accessed by The Indian Express), the fire that started around 1.30 am at plant 2 could have been the result of THF leakage in the solvent recovery tank located on the ground floor, as informed by company representative Nayan Jadav. The explosion could have been the result of the leaked THF coming in contact with air, he had added.
The report stated that the THF tank was located in tank farm area where pipelines and machinery, including recovery tank, were also located. As both the tank farm area and plant 2 were affected in the fire, the source of explosion could not be verified, it added.
The NGT principal bench, comprising Coram of Justice Sudhir Agarwal and judicial member Senthil Vel, had transferred the ATR to the tribunal’s West Zone bench in Pune for further proceedings, as the matter relates to Gujarat, which comes under the jurisdiction of the West Zone of NGT.
