The Ahmedabad city police revoked permission for a protest demonstration in support of Palestine to be held on Friday, a day after it was issued, citing ‘VVIP movements’ in the city.

Ahmedabad is hosting the state event for the Meri Mitti Mera Desh programme to commemorate the 75th year of Independence at the Sabarmati Riverfront. Police sources said there would be a lot of VIP movement on account of the event, which was why the permission was withdrawn.

K K Buval, Police Inspector of Rakhiyal police station said, “We revoked the permission to protest in view of the VVIP movement today. Keeping in mind the traffic and the time of the protest, we had given permission considering there wasn’t anything else on the day.”

“They asked for the permission on Wednesday, and we granted it on Thursday. However, we revoked it today (Friday),” he added.

Speaking to The Indian Express, lawyer and a member of a civil society group Shamshad Pathan said, “We asked (permission) on a very simple ground. We wanted that the inhuman attacks on Palestine should be stopped immediately and the programme was to express condolence for the deceased Palestinians.”

“We said that we announced the programme after the written permission was obtained, we did not do (publicise) it before that. We applied for the permission four days ago, and we received the permission yesterday (Thursday) and then we publicised the event. Our intention was to bring people together and give a good message for humanity, as we did in Satellite (in Ahmedabad) as well on October 23 on the same issue,” he added.
