Two days after a couple allegedly died of electrocution in Ahmedabad’s Narol area, a simultaneous probe into the matter is underway by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and the other, by the Ahmedabad City Police, said sources on Wednesday even as allegations of negligence during the monsoon have also cropped up.

The victims have been identified as 32-year-old Rajan Singhal and his wife Ankita Singhal (27). According to the officers, the incident happened on Monday evening when the bike-borne couple was on the way back to their home in Narol after meeting a relative at LG Hospital in Maninagar. While driving through the waterlogged Mutton Galli, their vehicle hit a pothole and Ankita slipped off the two-wheeler, said sources. Even as Rajan tried to help her up, both got electrocuted after coming in contact with a live wire in the water, said sources. The bystanders had to wait to help the couple till the electricity to the area was cut off, said sources.

The couple was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead, leading to an outcry over negligence.

The Narol police filed an Accidental Death (AD) report and are investigating the matter along with the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL). Following the incident, a few members from Congress along with the kin of the deceased held a protest at the AMC office on Tuesday. The protesters, while demanding justice for the couple, sought an investigation into the matter, suspension of the officials responsible and Rs 50 lakh compensation for the family. Lanter, the AMC set up a team to probe the matter. The team has been given seven days to submit a report, said sources. South Zone Deputy Municipal Commissioner BC Patel told The Indian Express: “The investigation into the matter is underway. We are trying to find out what went wrong and why the couple got electrocuted. Further action would be taken depending on the outcome of both investigations”.
