Three sanitation workers who entered an underground sewage drain at Dahej taluka in Bharuch district died after inhaling poisonous gases Tuesday.

Dahej police said the deceased have been identified as Gulsingh Muniya (30), Paresh Katara (25) and Anil Parmar (24)—all Dahod natives and residents of Dahej. The three had entered the drain to clean it while two remained outside to assist them. However, as there was no movement from inside the line after sometime, the two who were outside entered the drain to check it.

However, they too experienced breathing problems due to the gases. They immediately came out and intimated the Dahej gram panchayat.

Fire brigade officials and police reached the spot and took out the bodies from inside the drain.  The bodies were handed to the relatives of the victims after post-mortem.

The police has registered an offence of accidental death and began a probe.
