Sports drama Mukkabaaz, starring Vineet Kumar Singh, Zoya Hussain, Jimmy Shergill and Ravi Kishan, releases this Friday. The Anurag Kashyap directorial is a love story of a boxer packed with Kashyap's patent elements of drama, action and politics. The film highlights the problem of casteism in the society and after watching the trailer of the film, it looks like Anurag Kashyap has once again chosen his unconventional way of storytelling. Vineet Kumar Singh, who will begin his cinematic journey as a lead actor for the first time in Anurag Kashyap directorial Mukkabaaz, has earlier impressed the audience with his power-packed performances in movies like Issaq, Gangs of Wasseypur, Ugly and Bombay Talkies. The actor who plays Shravan, Uttar Pradesh’s Mike Tyson in the movie is returning to the screen after a hiatus of four years and has undergone extensive year-long boxing training in Punjab to fit into the skin of his character for the film. Interestingly, Vineet also has screenplay credits to his name for the boxing drama.
Anurag Kashyap has earlier given cinephiles films like Gangs of Wasseypur, Dev D, Black and Friday. Speaking about the film, Anurag has said that Mukkabaaz is his first “prem pradhan” film and he has used the sports drama to dwell on the power dynamics in Uttar Pradesh.
Keeping up with the flavour of Bollywood these days, Mukkabaaz is also set in Bareilly, a small town of Uttar Pradesh and its protagonists Vineet plays a Kshatriya wrestler who falls in love with a deaf and mute Brahmin woman. The films set in small towns like Bareilly ki Barfi, Babumoshai Bandookbaaz and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan have found favour with both critics and audiences.
The film has already won over the audiences of film festivals like MAMI Mumbai Film Festival and Toronto Film Festival. The film got a standing ovation from the audience and critics gave it rave reviews. Also, it was said that Mukkabaaz is a comeback of sorts for Anurag Kashyap.
Jimmy Shergill, who has always impressed with his craft, looks promising as an upper-caste don Mishra who won't let his niece marry a lower caste guy Shravan, played by Vineet Kumar Singh. Also, actor Ravi Kishan is adding muscle to this impactful cast of Mukkabaaz.
