Passengers were forced to leave a New Jersey train after flames and smoke appeared on the tracks on Monday morning, according to the Associated Press (AP).

The fire broke out at 6:19am on a Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) train heading east. The incident happened at Newport station in Jersey City, New Jersey, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said in a statement quoted by AP.

A video shared on social media shows smoke filling a train carriage. In the clip, passengers can be heard saying, “open the door” and “easy, easy” as they move to get out. The video then shows bright flames rising from the rails, nearly reaching the top of the train car.

“All passengers were safely evacuated to the platform,” the Port Authority said.

Thirteen people were treated for smoke inhalation. Nine of them were taken to hospital for further checks, according to AP.

PATH trains run daily between northern New Jersey and Manhattan, carrying around 165,000 passengers, the Port Authority told AP.

“We truly apologize for this experience and for any concerns over your safety that arose,” the Port Authority said in a statement.

Service on the affected lines resumed about five hours after the fire was first reported. The cause of the fire is being investigated
