Minutes after take-off, the Lion Air flight with 188 passengers on board crashed into the sea Monday. The flight took off from Jakarta to the city of Pangkal Pinang off the island of Sumatra. A tugboat leaving the capital’s port had reportedly seen the craft falling. The jet was a Boeing 737 MAX 8.
The accident is the first to be reported that involves the widely-sold Boeing 737 MAX, an updated, more fuel-efficient version of the manufacturer’s workhorse single-aisle jet.

As against 2017 which was the safest year in history for commercial airlines, with no incident of passenger jets crashing according to the Aviation Safety Network (ASN), 2018 has seen its share of fatalities in numerous aviation tragedies.

May 18, 2018: In Cuba’s deadliest plane crash since 1989, a fiery crash of an aging Boeing passenger jet shortly after takeoff from Havana had killed 110 of the 113 on board.

March 13, 2018: At least 49 people were killed and 12 critically injured as a US-Bangla aircraft with 71 people including four crew members on board crash landed at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu on Monday afternoon and erupted in flames. The Dash-8 Canadian aircraft clipped the airport fence and landed off the runway after taking an unusual route — North to South instead of South to North. It burst into flames as it was still struggling to get to the track.

February 11, 2018: All 71 passengers onboard a Russian passenger plane crashed near Moscow, shortly after takeoff from one of the city’s airports.
