Trump-Musk war of words breaks out over Big, Beautiful spending bill: ‘Very disappointed in Elon,’ says US President

Trump Elon Musk clash: Soon after Trump's statements, Musk, who recently left his position as the DOGE boss, shot back at Trump's assertion, saying he was never shown the bill.

Donald Trump disappointed in Musk: The gloves were off in a verbal duel between US President Donald Trump and the world’s richest man Elon Musk over the contentious Big, Beautiful spending bill. A day after Musk publicly slammed the tax and spending bill, Trump Thursday reacted to the Tesla CEO’s statement, saying: “I’m very disappointed in Elon. I’ve helped Elon a lot.”

Speaking to reporters in his Oval Office, Trump said: “Look, Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will any more.” His remarks came in response to Musk’s harsh criticism on X, where the billionaire described the bill as a “disgusting abomination” and called out lawmakers who supported it: “You know you did wrong. You know it.”

But on Thursday, Trump defended the legislation, which he called “the biggest cut in the history of our country,” and insisted that Musk had previously shown no objections. “Elon knew the inner workings of this bill, better than almost anybody sitting here… He never had a problem until right after he left,” Trump said, implying Musk’s criticism only began once he learned the bill would cut the EV mandate — something that directly impacts Musk’s business interests.

Trump added: “He hasn’t said anything about me that’s bad… but I’m sure that’ll be next.” He further added that Musk’s change of tone was unexpected, saying, “If you saw the statements he made about me… he said the most beautiful things.”

Soon after Trump’s statements, Musk, who recently left his position as the DOGE boss, shot back at Trump’s assertion, saying he was never shown the bill.

“False, this bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!,” Musk wrote in a post on X.
