A fight between 10 people in a centre in Australia’s Melbourne has led to a lockdown of the shopping centre and a man was reportedly admitted to hospital after reports suggest some of them were armed with knives.
According to ABC News, Preston’s Northland Shopping Centre came under lockdown following reports of about 10 people involved in a violent skirmish at about 2:30 pm on Sunday. Emergency services were called to the Murray Road shopping centre after the incident was reported.
Victoria Police said a man had been transported to hospital after the violent episode in a serious but stable condition. According to a spokesperson of Victoria Ambulance, the man is said to be in his 20s and he was admitted to Royal Melbourne Hospital with injuries in his upper body.
Police have arrested two people allegedly involved in the incident and an inquiry is currently underway. Videos from the shopping centre showed dozens of people standing outside as police, ambulance and other emergency responders swarmed the shopping centre.
According to a shopper, Alicia Bryne, who was approaching the centre at the time, said she heard the noise of helicopters and people evacuating the shopping centre. “It was a bit chaotic…a lot of cars coming out of the shopping centre,” Bryne said, as per ABC News.
While the detailed investigation was underway, the Northland Shopping Centre in northeast Melbourne’s Preston still remains under lockdown. The exact reason behind the violent fighting still remains to be clear but police believe the incident was “targeted”, and those involved knew each other.
