Jimmy Carter turns 100: Video of beloved former president greeting passengers on a commercial flight goes viral

Carter was US President from 1977 to 1981 and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his dedication to promoting human rights.

Former US President Jimmy Carter celebrated his 100th birthday on Tuesday, becoming the first American president to reach this milestone. Now, an old video of him traveling on a commercial flight has resurfaced online.

Shared on Reddit by a user named ‘asiasbutterfly’ in the community “r/MadeMeSmile,” the video captures a cheerful Carter shaking hands and greeting fellow passengers on the plane. Accompanied by who appears to be a security agent, the former president makes his way down the aisle, extending his hand to warmly connect with each traveller.

The video was accompanied by a caption that reads, “President Jimmy Carter flies commercial, greets every passenger on the flight. Happy 100, Jimmy,” and it has amassed over 74,000 likes till now.

“Can confirm. I flew a red eye years ago and Jimmy Carter happened to be on the flight. He sat a few seats in front of me. He shook everybody’s hand on the plane. It was great,” wrote an individual in the comments. Another user wrote, “He was the president when I was born and my parents have a house because of him. I grew up in a Jimmy Carter home and I’m proud to say that. Bless man.”

A third commented, “Not once in the 42 years since 1981 has he sought to profit. He seeks peace, he advocates for young women, he builds houses. A superb human. He was a real President,” another person replied to that comment saying, “Don’t forget his work to eliminate parasitic diseases – particularly Guinea worm and river blindness. Diseases that mostly affect disadvantaged Africans.”
