A video showing a little girl crossing a road in Japan is being widely shared online as it shows a beautiful tradition that has emerged in the East Asian country.
The little girl is seen holding an umbrella and waiting to cross the road at a zebra crossing. A bus that is seen approaching her, comes to a halt to let her pass. As she crossed the road, she turned back and gave a bow to the bus driver as a gesture of appreciation.
An X account named Third Eye (@3rdEyeDude) reposted the video and wrote, “In Japanese community, a beautiful tradition has emerged where vehicles gracefully come to a halt, allowing pedestrians, especially children, to safely cross the road. What’s even more heartening is the respectful acknowledgment from the kids as they bow down to vehicles, expressing gratitude for the pause. This symbiotic relationship between drivers and pedestrians exemplifies the importance of mutual respect on the roads. As vehicles yield to pedestrians, a silent understanding is formed – a pact for safety. Witnessing children reciprocate with a grateful nod or bow adds a touch of warmth to our daily commute, emphasizing the significance of creating a pedestrian-friendly environment.”

“We are learning technology, bullet trains etc from Japan but the first thing we should learn from Japan is humility and respect,” a user commented. “In India, if you stop for a pedestrian, you will get rear ended. Happened to me just this evening,” said another. “This is more to do with Japanese culture of respect for another human being/ being. And it’s practiced by them in all walks of life. Including while on the road (as pedestrian, or passenger or motorists, et al),” another person wrote.
