TM Roh, president of Electronics and mobile business Southeast Asia in a media briefing held on Monday during his visit to India confirmed that Samsung will soon begin manufacturing laptops at its Noida factory, which is the company’s second-largest manufacturing facility in the world.
Samsung has been manufacturing smartphones, smart TVs, and a few more products at the Noida factory since 2018. This development comes just a few months after the Govt of India banned the import of laptops in August 2023, although, the regulation was put on hold after a while.
The factory currently can produce over 120 million units of smartphones per year, which is also the world’s largest mobile factory. Starting this year, the company will begin assembling laptops, which will be sold in India and the preparations for the same are underway.
Currently, all the Samsung laptops sold in India are either imported from either China or Vietnam and by manufacturing laptops in India, Samsung will be able to save on the import duties, which could reflect in a slight price reduction of Galaxy laptops in India.
Unlike some of the laptop manufacturers in India, Samsung has not applied for the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which will ease brands to set up and manufacture hardware products like laptops and personal computers in India with up to five per cent incentive and up to an additional four per cent incentive for using domestically manufactured components in these devices, which will help brands which sell a lot of laptops in the country.
