Sony has put the PlayStation 4 through its mid life upgrade. For those who were stuck watching the Apple event, Sony was conducting another event in New York. The company announced the launch of not one but two new PS4 models. The first model is a slimmer version of the original PS4. The company also gave a sneak peak at the PS4 ‘Pro’ – a console that will be capable of doing 4K gameplay.
The first in the lineup is the PS4 Slim, which will be replacing the first generation (thicker) PS4. Sony will phase out the thicker first generation PS4, and the slim version will carry the PS4 name forward. There is no hardware changes to the new PS4, so if you already own a the first generation model – you have practically no incentive to upgrade to this newer model. The new PS4 will be available for sale starting September 15 at a price of $299 (approx Rs 20,000) across most markets as per Sony.
PlayStation 4 Pro on the other hand is a little more exciting. The PS4 Pro will be capable of 4K HDR gameplay, something that has been exclusive to PC gamers. Not all games would necessarily be in 4K HDR as that decision will be up to the developers. PS4 Pro has had the code name ‘Neo’ for the past few months, and is going to launch on November 10 2016, much before Microsoft starts shipping 4K-HDR capable Xbox Scorpio. PS4 Pro will launch at price tag of $399 (approx Rs 26,500) across various markets, but no word on India availability and price yet.
Both the PlayStation models will be compatible with the Sony Playstation VR headset that will start shipping on October 13. The company will also bring HDR gaming to the existing consoles through a software update.
