The country will save between Rs 350 and Rs 400 crore in the import of crude oil.

The five-dollar per barrel cut in crude price by OPEC will bring a bonanza to India. The country will save between Rs 350 and Rs 400 crore in the import of crude oil. According to official statistics, the net import bill for crude in 1982-83 is estimated at Rs 3,965 crore, after taking into account Rs 1,296 crore earned by India from the export of Bombay High crude.

Army In Assam: The Assam government gave the army overall control of law and order in some more areas after declaring them “disturbed”. The government’s action came after an explosion ripped through a three-tier compartment of Cachar Express at Panekheti, about 20 km from Gauhati, besides other violent incidents elsewhere in the state.

Jhuggi Tragedy: A two-year-old infant was killed alive and around 1,000 jhuggis were gutted in a massive fire which broke out in the jhuggi colony near Badli village in North Delhi. Vijay, son of Joginder, a factory worker, was burnt to death in his jhuggi, where the conflagration reportedly started, while Tilthu Ram, 35, and Ram Swarup, 60, both factory workers, were admitted to Hindu Rao Hospital with minor burns.

Zia on Nukes: President Zia-ul-Haq has said that at his next meeting with prime minister Indira Gandhi, he would take up Pakistan’s proposal for joint inspection of nuclear installations of the two countries. The President was replying to a question asked by a newsman at Karachi airport. Asked about the non-aligned summit concluded recently in New Delhi, President Zia said “we are quite satisfied about the performance at the summit.”
