.

In line with the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs’ (CCPA) decision, the Ministry of Water Resources today sent a proposal to the Prime Minister asking him to seek Presidential reference on the Sutlej-Yamuna canal issue.

The proposal before the PM is to ask the President to refer the issue to the apex court under Article 143 which would then seek the views of the concerned states on river water-sharing. Since its findings would not be binding, the court would try and persuade the Punjab government to reverse its Assembly’s decision to abrogate water-sharing accords.

Political parties in Punjab joined hands to circumvent the July 15-deadline set by the SC for handing over the SYL construction to the Centre by annulling water-sharing pacts with Haryana, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh.
