Brussels, June 20: Turkish international striker Hakan Sukur stepped out of the shadows on Monday to fire Turkey into the history books and send Euro 2000 co-hosts Belgium crashing out of the tournament.

Sukur’s goal took Turkey through to the European Championship quarter-finals for the first time in their history.

His first goal just before half time owed much to the rash goalkeeping of Belgium’s Filip de Wilde who failed to deal with a high ball allowing Sukur to send a looping header into an empty net.

There was no luck about the second after 70 minutes, however, a thunderous drive into the top corner which rounded off a lightning three-man move involving Suat Kaya and Arif Erdem.
