MUMBAI, December 9: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Monday arrested three employees of the office of Deputy Controller (Unauthorised Encroachment and Structures) for demanding a bribe of Rs 10,000 from two slum dwellers at Antop Hill. Pandharinath K Sanke (54), Chandrakant alias Babu L Kadam (34), Arvind J Kshirsagar (32) were caught red handed by ACB sleuths while accepting a bribe of Rs 4,500 at their office at Parel. ACB sources said, Kadam and Kshirsagar along with their colleagues had gone to demolish hutments at Bharatiya Kamal Nagar hutments, Antop Hill on December 3. Kshirsagar and his colleague Patil both nayab tehsildars were approached by Kamruddin alias Hussain Shaikh and R Chaurasiya who requested the duo not to demolish the slums.
Kshirsagar then demanded a bribe of Rs 5000 each. Shaikh and Chaurasiya approached the ACB. The trio were remanded by additional chief metropolitan magistrate to police custody till Friday.
Bhayander resident robbed
A resident of Bhayander was robbed of Rs five lakh by five unidentified persons yesterday evening while he was travelling in a jeep with his friends in Borivli east.
Police sources said Ranvir S Singh, who owns a petrol pump at Borivli, and his friends were travelling in a jeep with Rs five lakh, the day’s collection from the pump, at Quarter Road. When they reached Laxmi Gas Agency, a blue coloured Maruti car intercepted them. Five persons armed with choppers grabbed the money and fled. Kasturba Marg police station has registered a case under section 392 of IPC.
3 watchmen arrested
Three watchmen were arrested by the police on Monday in connection with the brutal murder of a girl at Seven Bungalows on Saturday night. Dhaval Singh (23), Amar Singh (22) and Narbahadur Singh (24) were arrested in Pune yesterday afternoon and brought to Mumbai. The police said three other watchmen, Labahadur Singh, Jai Singh and Chandra Singh, are still at large. The identity of the girl is yet to be ascertained. Sources in the DN Nagar police station said the girl was allegedly a prostitute. The watchmen said the watchmen assaulted her in the terrace of Tirupati Apartments and later threw her down. The body was found on Sunday, and immediate suspects were the six watchmen, who went missing on Sunday morning.
Increase in tea prices
The Mumbai Tea Dealers’ Association has decided to raise the retail prices of loose tea powder by Rs 10 per kilogram. Reasons for the price hike include a slump in tea production and increased outflow of tea by way of exports. Tea production in India is estimated at around 80 crore kg against the domestic consumption of 63.5 kg.
