As preparations get underway for National Security Advisor J.N. Dixit to hold the next round of talks on the boundary question with Chinese special representative in Beijing next month, visiting Chinese state councillor and former foreign minister, Tang Jiaxuan, today favoured an early settlement to the issue in a ‘‘pragmatic and flexible way’’.
Jiaxuan, who met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today, felt the problem could be resolved by following a practical approach. ‘‘There is need to settle the boundary dispute at an early date. There is no reason why we can’t find a solution. I am personally very optimistic of the future prospects of negotiations on the boundary question,’’ he said.
According to him, negotiations have entered ‘‘crucial levels’’ and the special representatives were framing broad principles at the macro level for other officials to address the details of the problem.
‘‘Negotiations between India and China will continue to move forward and make progress. The Chinese view is that for settling the issue…both countries should make mutual adjustments,’’ he said.
The Chinese leader stressed on the need for simultaneously strengthening bilateral ties. ‘‘We need to take forward cooperation in various fields to face questions, including those left over by history, in a flexible and practical manner. We need to broaden vision to deepen relations and open up new vistas.’’
Jiaxuan also backed India’s aspirations to play a more important role on the international stage, including in the UN SC.
‘‘India is a major country in Asia as well as one of the developoing countries with the fastest growth rate. China fully understands India’s position and endorses its aspirations of playing an important role in international affairs. We also hope to see that India plays a greater and constructive role in the the UN Security Council.’’
