Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala today called for nationalisation of rivers and water resources as had been done in case of mines and minerals to strengthen the national fabric of the country.

He said that water, which was one of the most critical resources of this millennium, should be made a national asset for its equal distribution and optimum management. Terming the recent passing of the Punjab Termination of Agreements Bill, 2004 by the Punjab government as undemocratic, Chautala questioned how states could do so. ‘‘If the state governments, terminate all financial agreements also, the consequences would be disastrous,’’ he said.

He said if Himachal Pradesh, J-K and Uttaranchal refuse to give their water to other states, there would be chaos in the country. ‘‘If Haryana also terminates the Yamuna Accord, under which water is supplied to Delhi, what would be the condition of the people living there,’’ he asked.
