Atleast four persons were injured and a police jeep set on fire as a clash between two communities in Badlapur town on Sunday resulted in a riot-like situation. The police resorted to firing to quell the tension, but said the four persons who were hospitalised with bullet injuries were most likely shot at by rival groups.

The incident which occurred between 9.30 pm to 10 pm, started with stone throwing. It could not be ascertained how it started. When the police fired, the mob hurled stones at them too, injuring the police driver of a wireless mobile van, who has now been admitted to a hospital. A police jeep was set on fire too.

Thane Police Commissioner S M Shangari said, ‘‘The situation is tense but has been brought under control. There was some problem between two communities, however it has not been ascertained how the problem started. There has been no loss of life but injuries and damages to property cannot be ruled out. The state reserve police and local police has been brought in.’’

A senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader of Badlapur said, ‘‘There was some problem between the youth of both communities for the last eight days. And the problem aggravated on Sunday night when property of one community was damaged by a stone-throwing mob resulting in a riot-like situation.’’
