Terror attacks in Mumbai echoed in Canadian Parliament

Describing the terror attacks in Mumbai as ‘despicable acts of violence’, Canada has said that it stands united with India against all forms of terrorism.

Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Lawrence Cannon spoke with External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and expressed Toronto’s condolences for those killed and injured in these ‘cowardly’ attacks.

“On behalf of all Canadians, I extend my condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives and I wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” he said.

Supporting India in its fight against terrorism, he said: “Canada stands firmly united with the Government of India in condemning these despicable acts of violence. Canada and India share a commitment to freedom, democracy, human rights and rule of law. Among our mutual priorities is close cooperation to promote international security and to fight terrorism.”

“We will continue to monitor events as they develop,” he added.

Meanwhile, Parliamentary Secretary to the minister of Foreign Affairs, Deepak Obhrai, condemned Mumbai terror attacks in the House of Commons.

“The ties that bind Canada and India are strong and these attacks have only strengthened our resolve to continue working together for the mutual security and prosperity of our peoples,” he said.

“We continue to work closely with Indian authorities to assist any Canadians who may be directly affected by these attacks,” he said in a statement.

“On behalf of Government and people of Canada I stand today to condemn, in the strongest terms, the deplorable terrorist attacks in Mumbai. The use of violence and terror against innocent civilians is appalling and must not be tolerated,” Obhrai said.
