A Quora user’s question about a blood pressure reading and whether it is something to worry about sparked our inquisitive minds to seek answers. The user asked: ‘My blood pressure reads 133/90, is this too high? I have been feeling dizzy all week. When should I begin to worry?’
We reached out to experts for insightful views.
Dr Manjusha Agarwal, senior consultant, internal medicine, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, said that a blood pressure reading of 133/90 mmHg falls in the high-normal to borderline high range.
“The top number (systolic, 133) is only slightly raised, but the bottom number (diastolic, 90) is considered high. Occasional mild increases can happen because of various factors such as stress, lack of sleep, or salty foods. However, if you are feeling dizzy for a whole week, it is important not to ignore it and consult a doctor,” Dr Agarwal stressed.
Notably, blood pressure is the force at which the blood pushes against the walls of the arteries. So, each time the heart beats, it pumps blood into the arteries. As such, the blood pressure is highest when the heart beats and pumps the blood.
Occasional reading like this may not be alarming, but persistent elevations when accompanied by symptoms like dizziness require closer attention, added Dr Sanchayan Roy, senior consultant, internal medicine, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Chirag Enclave, Delhi.
Dr Roy shared that dizziness can also be linked to inner ear issues, and continuous fluctuation in blood sugar levels – but when combined with high blood pressure, it should not be ignored.
According to Dr Agarwal, it is essential to consult the doctor if the blood pressure stays at or above this level on multiple checks, or even if you experience other symptoms such as severe headache, chest pain, shortness of breath, or vision changes.
It is a good idea to monitor your blood pressure regularly at home or go to the clinic, reduce salt, manage stress, and stay hydrated. “Since you already feel dizzy, see a doctor soon to rule out any serious cause. Remember, those detected with high blood pressure should take utmost care of themselves,” said Dr Agarwal.
