Ram Kapoor reveals how his recent 55-kilo weight loss is different from when he lost 30 kg twice before: ‘Have been a morbid obese 140-kilo man for 20 years’

"I went with (the weight) for 15 years without inhibitions. But I realised that eventually, I would set a goal for myself. After 50, I will do the turnaround," Ram Kapoor said

Ram Kapoor has been making headlines with his inspiring weight loss transformation after losing 55 kilos. Now, the Bade Achhe Lagte Hain actor has opened up about the difference(s) between his latest and previous weight loss attempts — when he lost 30 kilos twice.

“While I was shooting for 15 years, Gautami (Kapoor; wife) didn’t say a thing to me. (But) she was worried about my health. I developed type 2 diabetes and all kinds of health issues — which I have solved now. I went with (the weight) for 15 years without inhibitions. But I realised that eventually, I would set a goal for myself. After 50, I will do the turnaround,” Kapoor told comedian and satirist Cyrus Broacha on his YouTube channel.

Revealing that while he has lost “30 kilos twice” before, he admitted that the “diet was wrong” both times. “You should never diet,” he stressed.

Then how did he lose 55 kilos and sustain it, too? All credit goes to a change of mindset. “Here’s my two bits. I am no expert. I am only talking about my experience. I have been a morbid obese, 140-kilo man for 20 years. All the health problems of the world. Twice, I lost 30 kilos and it came back both times. This time, what I have done to lose 55 kilos with a great level of health is that instead of dieting, I worked on my mindset. Any diet is temporary and requires willpower. When overall health and fitness are your concern, everything else falls into place. This doesn’t require willpower but a mindset shift,” described Kapoor.

Stating that he eats “only two meals a day,” Ram Kapoor continued, “One at about 10.30 am and another at 6.30 pm. Nothing in the middle. No snacking at all. I have water or coffee or tea. That’s it.” But that does not mean he does not party. The actor mentioned that whenever he goes out partying (which is ‘not every day’), he ensures to “finish off the meal by 6.30 pm”. “Even if I party till two in the morning, I don’t eat after sunset. Period. After sunset, you don’t put anything in your mouth,” he added.

Sharing that he thinks diets are designed for “you to fail” because while they promise weight loss and it may happen, “they don’t tell you that if you don’t change your mindset, it (lost weight) will come back. Because habits and lifestyles have not changed. That has to change.”

But does a change in mindset really make a huge difference?

Yes, say experts, adding that developing a positive mindset is fundamental. “It takes dedication and a 360-mindset change to maintain a healthy physique. Reducing refined carbohydrates and avoiding sugars and trans fats should be a lifestyle norm. If one pays heed to it for a few weeks, it is not hard to maintain it for a long time,” said Dr Dilip Gude, senior consultant physician at Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad.

This also involves cultivating a healthy relationship with food, viewing exercise as a form of self-care rather than punishment, and being patient with the transformation process.

“Workouts and eating healthy must not feel like a chore; these habits should be something one enjoys doing,” stressed Dr Gude, adding that being with friends or family with a similar mindset makes it easier to stick to one’s goals. “Of course, there can be cheat days, but compensating those extra calories by burning them/working out more is the mindset one should aim for,” said Dr Gude.

These should also be accompanied by lifestyle measures like sleeping right, portion control, and drinking enough water. “It is best to consult your dietitian or healthcare provider to have a tailored routine,” said Dr Gude.
