Would you consider going all the way down to 1,375 feet underground to get a night of sleep? This hotel in Wales has this offer up for grabs.
Located below the mountains of Snowdonia in Wales, this subterranean hotel gives you a chance to “journey your way down through an abandoned Victorian slate mine” to reach the remote off-grid adventure camp of Deep Sleep, according to Go Below, the outdoor activity company that is running the hotel.
Open for only one night a week, on Saturday night, the hotel has four private twin-bed cabins and a romantic grotto with a double bed.
According to the official website of Go Below, you can book a private cabin for £350 (INR 36,539), and the total cost for two people’ stay at the grotto room will amount to £550 (INR 57,427).
Though the cabins may seem like your garden-variety adventure camps, there is nothing normal about the climbing you will have to do to get there.
The journey begins at the Tanygrisiau base, near Blaenau Ffestiniog, from where you will be required to make a 45-minute hike, which is steep at times, towards the top.
After the hike, you will get geared up with a helmet, headtorch, harness and Wellington boots to journey deep into the recesses of the “world’s largest and deepest abandoned slate mine,” as per Go Below’s website.
The route downwards is perilous, with ancient miners’ stairways, decaying bridges and scrambles to negotiate. After an hour of this journey, you will be 1,375 feet underground at the Deep Sleep hotel.
You’ll be fed warm drinks, expedition style meals and breakfast snacks at the hotel’s picnic table while you’re staying there.
The whole party makes the trek back to the real world the next morning.
According to Go Below’s website, the grotto room is booked throughout till October.
The mine where the hotel is built was closed down in the mid-20th century and left to rot, as per a report in BBC.
Go Below Underground Adventures has started running a couple of programs like these in the mine. Firstly, it boasts the world’s first deepest zip line and free-fall, and now there’s the deepest overnight stay.
