The Supreme Court Tuesday allowed a request seeking directions to clean the water tank in the disputed Kashi Vishwanath temple-Gyanvapi mosque complex.

During a videographic survey in May 2022, a structure resembling a Shivling was claimed to have been found in this tank which was being used by Muslims for Wuzu ritual. In May 2022, the SC had ordered protection of the structure.

Subsequently in May 2022, the SC asked the Varanasi district magistrate to secure the area without impeding or restricting the rights of Muslims to access and offer namaz at the mosque.

On Tuesday, a three-judge bench presided by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud was hearing a plea by Hindu plaintiffs, who sought directions to clean it on the ground that dead fish was found in it. The mosque side did not oppose the application and said they too had moved a similar request before the district collector.

The bench directed that the cleaning be carried out under the supervision of the Varanasi district collector.
