Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a surprise visit to the 10th-crore beneficiary of the Ujjawala scheme on Saturday, during a visit to the temple town of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh.

Meera, who lives in a colony near the Lata Mangeshkar Chowk in Ayodhya, prepared tea for Modi, which he described as “good, but a little too sweet”.

When the PM’s cavalcade stopped near the house, surprised locals began shouting “Modi-Modi”.


He also enquired about the well-being of Meera’s family and that of the colony. Meera, on her part, informed Modi that she got free gas and accommodation.

“Earlier, I had a kutcha house, but now it has become pucca,” she said. She further expressed happiness at the chance to host Modi in her residence.

Modi was in Ayodhya on Saturday to inaugurate the Maharshi Valmiki airport, the revamped Ayodhya Dham railway station, and lay the foundation stone of projects worth Rs 15,700 crore.


Later, during an address at a rally, Modi said, “Today I got the opportunity to have tea at the house of the 10th-crore beneficiary of Ujjwala gas connection.” He also recalled the scheme’s launch from Ballia in May 2016 and added that even though it was “ridiculed” back then, it has managed to change the lives of crores of women.

The scheme was started to provide LPG connection to women belonging to below poverty line (BPL) families.

In a post in Hindi on X, Modi said, “Held a ‘chaai pe charchaa’ at the house of sister Meera ji, the 10th-crore beneficiary of Ujjwala Yojana, along with her family members in Ayodhya. I felt very satisfied to know how government schemes have made the life of the entire family easier.”

A statement by the Uttar Pradesh government said the programme at Meera’s house was not scheduled in advance.
