India’s point person for engaging with the Taliban since they captured power in Afghanistan in August 2021, Jitender Pal Singh has been appointed as India’s next ambassador to Israel. His appointment comes at a time when efforts are underway to resolve the crisis in the Middle East with the hostages and ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas.

A 2002-batch IFS officer, Singh is currently serving as Joint Secretary, in charge of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran. He is also joint secretary in External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s office.

In the last four years, he has been engaging with the Taliban and has travelled to Afghanistan at least four times, including meeting Foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and Defence minister Mullah Yaqoob among others. He also met former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai. His continuous engagement did the groundwork for recent meeting between Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and the Taliban Foreign minister Muttaqi in Dubai.

He has served in Afghanistan after the terror attack on Indian embassy in Kabul that claimed the life of an Indian diplomat and an Army officer in 2008, and has been Deputy High Commissioner in Islamabad. Before coming to Delhi to assume the position of joint secretary, he was Consul General in Istanbul, Turkey.
