The state assembly and council moved a breach of privilege motion against two Marathi TV news channel editors Thursday for maligning the image of legislators on national TV while airing news about the assault on assistant police inspector Sachin Suryavanshi by five MLAs Tuesday.
The motion against IBN Lokmat editor Nikhil Wagle and ABP Majha editor Rajiv Khandekar was moved by Congress MLC Bhai Jagtap in the council, while in the assembly,Shashikant Shinde (NCP) took the initiative.
Industries minister Narayan Rane made a fiery speech in the assembly defending politicians and slamming the media and police.
He said,While it is true MLAs should be bound by decorum, the same applies to police. By now they should have suspended Suryanashi for his misbehaviour with Kshijit Thakur (Bahujan Vikas Aghadi MLA).
The way a section of the media has reported the incident is shocking. They are calling all politicians rowdy and uncouth. I am surprised at the patience shown by MLAs.
I must make it clear I may be a minister but I am an MLA first and know my responsibilities. I dont have to take lessons from others.
Ranes defence became a rallying point for all MLAs who have been demanding justice for their suspended and arrested colleagues for the last two days.
Shinde complained about unparliamentary words being used against the MLAs in the media.
Leader of the opposition Eknath Khadse said,I can state 22 cases where police have committed serious crimes. Police officers should realise politicians are also representing people and reckon their responsibilities.
Members of both Houses complained against channels using the terms goonda, mawali and nalayak to describe the MLAs.
MLCs Anil Parab and Neelam Gorhe (Shiv Sena),Ashish Shelar and Vinod Tawde (BJP) and Vidya Chavan (NCP) criticised TV channels for going overboard and assuming the role of the judiciary.
We have worked hard to gain the trust and support of the public. To label all of us goons and liars is inappropriate. The media should look at its own wrongdoings before pointing fingers at us, said Parab.
