Prisoners of Ludhiana jail, who have been taught baking by Lovely Professional University (LPU),have started producing biscuits, breads, buns, rusks and allied products under the brand ‘Anand’.

The project was a brainchild of the Punjab government to reform and rehabilitate prisoners, for which it had engaged LPU to provide training to the inmates.

Professors from LPU’s Department of Hotel Management helped establish facilities to impart training to the prisoners at Central Jail in Ludhiana. Principal Secretary Home Affairs and Justice D S Bains had inspected the trial run of the bakery unit.

Additional Director-General of Police R P Meena said: “Initially, the bakery products would be used in state jails. As the production increased, the Department of Jails made arrangements for further sale.”

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had recently visited Tihar Jail in Delhi, where such training was proved successful,to explore the possibility of a bakery unit in jails in Punjab. The plan was to impart skills in productive activities to prisoners so that they get reintegrated into society.

LPU Chancellor Ashok Mittal said: “I am very happy that the CM entrusted this task to our school of hospitality. When the prisoners are released, this training will help them to get settled once again with respect.”
